1.  Conventional Standard Therapies

Chemotherapy (with testing of chemotherapeutic sensitivity, where possible)

Hormonal therapy (in tissue expressing hormone receptors)

Pain therapy (medicinal, physical/physiotherapeutic and psychic)

Radiation therapy (in co-operation with external institutes for radiation therapy)

Surgical intervention (e.g. removal of skin metastasis, metastasis of lymphnods and extraction of samples for special investigations)

For the reduction of side effects of conventional, tumordestructive methods, as in chemo or radiation therapy, these procedures are complemented and enlarged by reconstructive methods, in order to increase the body own defense mechanism and to reduce harmful free radicals in healthy tissues (complementary cancer therapy). This enables not only an improvement of quality of life and reduction of infections, but also an increase of response rates to radiation or chemotherapy. Applying the appropriate biological methods, such as immune therapy and hyperthermia, resistance against chemotherapeutics can be reduced ("biomodulation") Considering chrono-biological rhythms (e.g. circadian rhythm) the response rates on chemotherapeutics can be improved ("chronomodulation").

2. Biological Therapies

The supplementary biological therapies on the one hand are designed to reduce side effects and immunosuppressive consequences of tumor- destructive therapies, like surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, and, on the other hand, to prepare the body for an active defense against cancer cells and against viruses and bacteria.

Supplementary physical-medical procedures, like hyperthermia and light therapy (photodynamic therapy), are able to destroy directly cancer cells in a less stressing way. The combination of tumor-destructive and biological methods often can provide a better all over response and survival..

2.1 Active specific and nonspecific immunotherapy

2.1.1  Tumorautovaccination (ASI)

If we are able to take a probe of your tumor, we can produce a vaccination from your own tumor cells. Together with a general stimulation of your immune system, we can "immunize" you against your own tumor (active specific immunization).

2.1.2  Fever-like whole body hyperthermia

We are inducing fever in your body for a couple of hours. In this way we can widely activate (mobilize) and stimulate (activate) all your immune system. Your body own defense cells are trained to assume their function in cancer defense; at the same time hidden infections of your organism will be detected and potentially cured (e.g. viral infections).

2.1.3  Active non-specific immunotherapy (ANI)/
        thymus, mistletoe, microbiological agents

Perhaps you have heard about the importance of the thymus gland as a central control organ of your defense system and the effects of thymus peptides and mistletoe extracts, to act as immunostimulators and therefore to improve the cytotoxic activity of the cellular immune system (anti-cancer activity). Thus, the thymus hormones and the mistletoe agents, apart from other plant extracts (e.g. example echinacea, thuja) and microbiological substances, play an important role in the general activation, support and stimulation of your body own defense system.

2.1.4  Cytokine therapy and Bilogical Response Modifiers (BRM)

The term BRM means "Biological Response Modifiers". It is a collective term for agents which are able to act beneficially on metabolic processes and defense mechanisms against cancer cells. Thus, these substances, for example, can considerably reinforce the efficiency of a chemotherapy. Cytokines, like interferon and interleukine, are part of the signal pathways of the immune system.

2.2 Hyperthermia

The hyperthermia therapy plays a special role in the BioMed Hospitals: It is well known, that tumor tissues are sensitive to heat (endogenous: fever therapy, or exogenous: hyperthermia). Thus, we are heating up targeted tumors using a short wave therapy (deep hyperthermia) unit or a special water-filtered infra-red light (superficial hyperthermia). In certain cases we have the possibility to apply another hyperthermia procedure directly in your abdomen or bladder rinsing with heated liquid in combination with a chemotherapy [intracavitary hyperthermic perfusion]). We can combine hyperthermia with various other methods (e.g. chemotherapy or radiation) and thus we are able to improve the efficiency in respect to conventional methods. If tumors are disseminated to different organs, we apply whole body hyperthermia (WBH) in combination with a chemotherapy.

The following hyperthermic therapies are applied:

Superficial hyperthermia (SHT)
Loco-regional deep hyperthermia (DHT)
Intracavitary hyperthermic perfusion therapy (ICHP)
Whole body hyperthermia (WBT)
High-frequency induced thermotherapy (HITT)

2.3 Orthomolecular Therapy

"Orthomolecular therapy" means the recovery of normal, physiologic conditions of minerals, trace elements, vitamins, amino acids and certain lipids in your body. Apart from the normalization of regular metabolic processes, it is thus possible to increase the antioxidative potential and so enable scavanging pv harmful free radicals in the body, as well as the stimulation of the (re)differentiation of malignant cells to benign cells.

By a special method (atomic absorption spectroscopy) for the determi- nation of mineral and trace element concentrations in your body liquids or cells, we opt for a targeted, individual supplementation and enrichment of these substances. In this context the administration of antioxidants, like vitamin A, C and E and beta-carotene, as well as selenium, plays an important role for the restauration of the immune system and therefor the diminution of damaged cells and shelter of organs like bowels and heart from damage. These substances can also protect against relapses or inhibit tumor growth (chemoprevention).

2.4 Enzyme Therapy

The therapy with proteolytic enzyme combinations plays an essential role in biological cancer therapy. Enzymes improve the flow properties of your blood, thus preventing thrombosis and freeing your immune system from suppressing influences (e.g. immune complexes or defense inhibiting proteins or peptides). Edemas and lymphoedemas can be reduced as well. The enzymes probably also play a decisive role in the settlement of cancer cells (inhibition of metastasizing) by digesting adhesion molecules of the cancer cells. The massive side effects of chemo and radiation therapy can be reduced considerably also by a combination of enzymes. Clinical and practical investigations also show a marked effective increase of cytotoxic activity of a chemotherapy by an enzyme combination (this applies both to cytostatics and to antibiotics).

2.5 Differentiation Therapy

This term stands for the intention of reconverting cancer cells into direction of "normal" cells and, on the other hand, to protect normal cells from being generated into cancer cells. Thus, for example, high dosage vitamin therapies (vitamin A, beta-carotene, colecalciferol ) and butyric acid are applied. These substances can protect against relapses or stop the tumor growth (chemoprevention).

2.6 Electrochemotherapy (Galvanotherapy)

A new therapeutical procedure for tumor diseases, which are not treatable by surgery and/or by other methods. Inserting fine needles into the tumor, this can be treated with a weak current. In this way a tumor can be attacked directly (electrolysis). This method is also called galvanotherapy.

2.7 Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic therapy is a special light therapy. Here the patient takes a light sensitive substance which predominately accumulates within the cancer tissue. The radiation of these sites with light can result in the direct destruction of tumors.

2.8 Molecular targeting Therapy

Clinical investigation with substances, like angiostatin or endostatin, which inhibit the growth of tumor vessels, is just in its beginning phase. Nevertheless today various agents are at our disposal, which inhibit, in experiments, the growth of tumors, like extracts of cartilage, extract of St. John's wort (hypericum), tamoxifen, thalidomid and extracts from bacteria (e.g. Nocardia opaca).

2.9 Gene therapy

The genetic therapy must be considered as a pure experimental therapy and at the moment has no clinical relevance. Nevertheless, the physicians and scientific advisors of the BioMed KliniK are keeping a close eye on all scientific projects. The introduction of an active, specific immune therapy with plasmid DNA seems to be a promising therapeutical approach.

2.10 Psychotherapy

In the BioMed Klinik psychotherapy assumes a special importance. In clinical studies the importance of psychotherapy for the improvement of the performance status, reduction of pain, improved coping with cancer problems, as well as an significant prolongation of survival rate can be shown.

Therefore the BioMed Klinik has a highly motivated and above average team of nurses, psychologists, welfare workers and physicians charged with these tasks. Psychotherapeutical methods includes individual talks and group therapy, visualization (e.g. Simonton-Method), progressive muscle relaxation (after Jacobsen), meditation, autogenic training, therapeutical hypnosis, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), breathing therapy.

Artistic work and music therapy complement the therapeutical methods. Ergotherapy is used for purposes of rebuilding and maintenance of independence in everyday life, and also for relaxing for the reduction of pain.

The ergotherapy above all includes motor-functional therapy and training for sensibilization, e.g. by creative handling of clay, stone and wood.

2.11 Oxygen and ozone therapy

Oxygen may help to improve your general performance status. The multi-step oxygen therapy by Prof. M. von Ardenne is the best known form of oxygen therapy, which can be offered. This method allows you to have a direct influence on your general state of health. Cancer cells are more aggressive in a environment low in oxygen.

You can directly strengthen your metabolism against cancer cells by the oxygen therapy. According to individual requirements we can apply either a multi-step oxygen therapy, intravenous oxygen (oxyvenation), a haematogenic oxidation therapy (HOT) or ozone therapy.

2.13 Diet and change of feeding habits

The natural way of eating for overall health and disease prevention and healing, which is based on scientific results, is extremely important to us. The chief cooks of the BioMed Klinik and their staff are fully conscious of this fact.

You will be really satisfied with the variety of meals which activates your metabolism and which is mainly characterized by the fact, that your body is freed from the burden of metabolic products. A nutritional advice service gives practical training in cooking courses and theoretical further education.

Phytoestrogens and antioxidants play an essential role in prevention and growth control of cancer.
